Steel-jaw leghold traps snap onto any animal that triggers them, and are widely considered inhumane. Over 80 countries have banned them from use. But the United States is not one of those countries. When Nyack learned that these barbaric traps are not only legal in the U.S., but are the most common ones used by American trappers, she knew she had to take action. Millions of animals are trapped and killed each year in the U.S. Most are killed for their fur, to protect livestock, or because they are considered a nuisance animal. But many end up in traps as collateral damage. A steel-jaw leghold trap doesn't just trip if the target animal steps into it. They frequently trap "trash" animals whose fur isn't worth any money, birds, and pets. Sometimes rare or endangered species will even wind up in a trap. Trappers can set free the animals that they caught unintentionally, but those animals are usually seriously hurt. They suffer from damaged tendons and ligaments, fractures, soft tissue damage, and other limb injuries. These injuries alone could prove life-threatening, but they also make it harder for the animals to find food and avoid predators. Animals set free from a steel-jaw leghold trap don't stand much of a chance. No animal should ever be killed for their fur, because they are a "nuisance," or for some misguided attempt at protecting livestock. But trapping animals and causing them so much pain and suffering before an inevitable death is just plain barbaric. It is time that the U.S. join the rest of the world and take a stand against animal cruelty.
