Despite Risks FDA Sanctions Unlabeled Synthetic Salmon

LOS ANGELES, CA. – Because of the risk of allergies, hormonal disruption, novel proteins and other serious health issues for consumers, and the risk of irreversible damage to the ecosystem, the Institute for Responsible Technology (IRT)  condemns  the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's approval of AquaBounty Technologies Inc. fast growing, gene-altered salmon, transgenic salmon.

"Independent scientists worldwide have rejected the safety testing protocols used by AquaBounty and accepted by the FDA as superficial and reckless," said Jeffrey Smith, Executive Director of the Institute for Responsible Technology. "Furthermore, based on the aggressive and violent behavior of genetically engineered salmon in a Canadian study, the ocean's delicate ecosystem is at risk."

The Atlantic Salmon Federation has expressed grave concerns about how natural food supplies and fish ecosystems could be disrupted should these new, voracious super-sized salmon accidentally escape into the wild.

"Fortunately, as more and more Americans turn away from consuming genetically modified foods as a whole, the tipping point of consumer rejection will likely be achieved well before the salmon is released onto the market," said Jeffrey Smith.

The tipping point, as exemplified in Europe in 1999, happened when the food companies realize that using GMO ingredients is costing them money because educated consumers refuse to buy them.

To accelerate the tipping point of consumer rejection, IRT asks consumers to re-double their commitment to eating non-GMO organic foods and spread the word about the health dangers of GMOs.

IRT further encourages supermarkets, restaurants, wholesalers and all aspects of the food industry to commit to not buying or selling these dangerous fish.
