What will the world think? What do you think?

Mahatma Gandhi said it best, “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the ways its animals are treated.”

The Flagler County Commission meets Monday, 11/15/2010, at 5 pm. The execution of the Pig Tales pigs should be on the agenda.

Here are the facts:

None of the Pig Tales pigs have ever tested positive for brucellosis! Furthermore, they have all been abundantly fed; have always had available, clean water; have always had shelter; have always been given special attention depending on their individual condition; and have always enjoyed lots of love, when under my care. Those that were old and thin were segregated and given supplemental food. All male pigs have been castrated. No females are pregnant and no piglets have been born. All fences are secure, and there have been no break-ins or break-outs, now that no fences are being sabotaged.

Flagler County has been trying to get rid of these pigs since 2008, when “Operation Pig Tales” was initiated by the County. Flagler County Planning & Zoning Director Mengel states in a letter on 3/25/10 to Deputy County Attorney Donna Wysong, that the County is “encouraging” its (the Sanctuary’s) “eventual elimination”. That’s been apparent to me since the County has been targeting and constantly harassing me in every possible way for years, and have openly admitted that elimination of the pigs has always been their ultimate goal.

This is politics. Money talks, and there are a number of influential good ole boys involved who have plenty!

The Flagler Humane Society (FHS) became involved because they were led to believe by the United States Humane Society (USHS) that financial support would be provided to FHS. Subsequently, the USHS backed out and FHS, after being unable to provide for the pigs and returning the pigs to me, had to save face by slinging mud.

While in the care of the FHS, nine pigs were immediately killed with single gunshots to the head. Most of those pigs were healthy, but appeared different to the new vet. I had to supplement the feed that FHS provided, because it was insufficient for the size of the herd and the smaller pigs were unable to fight the larger pigs for their share.

I was unable to meet the deferred prosecution agreement deadline because the Federal Department of Agriculture did not yet have the ear tags for the pigs. I had met all of the conditions concerning the pigs by the middle of 2010.

It’s interesting to note the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) vet that has been monitoring the pigs since 2005 (or before) seems to be no longer on the case. Perhaps his conscience would not allow him to lie. I’m sure he is sickened! Dr. C. Dix Harrell, USDA Assistant Area Veterinarian in Charge, has never even been to Pig Tales, to my knowledge. His letter demonstrates his ignorance. He states “There were only a few pigs on the premises that resembled “pure” pot-belly pigs. Most of the pigs appeared to be mixed with feral swine.” That is his only accurate statement and yet it seems to be a noteworthy surprise to him. Pig Tales has never been about pot-belly pigs. Pig Tales has been a retirement home for all pigs. FHS has placed wild and/or abandoned pigs at the Sanctuary. Pig Tales had rescued and provided homes for wild pigs from behind the Winn Dixie Plaza on Route 100 and Walmart on Granada in Ormond Beach. Thirty mixed pigs from Georgia were abandoned at Pig Tales. Two-hundred mixed pigs from Ft. Myers were abandoned at Pig Tales. And there have been wild pigs from neighbors fields who have jumped the fence, no doubt interested in the female pigs. All males have always been captured (as quickly as possible), secluded, and castrated. The pigs at Pig Tales were of mixed breed long before the USDA entered the picture. This was well known to the USDA officials, but apparently unknown by Assistant Vet Harrell, the new kid on the block.

I have never met or spoken to Mark Fagan with the Florida Department of Agriculture, from Ft. Lauderdale, who, by his own admission, has never been to Pig Tales, but intends on visiting the Sanctuary next week.

FHS has had almost a week to totally disrupt the Sanctuary premises and the routine of the pigs. FHS has not provided water for the pigs and have left the gate unlocked. The condition of the Sanctuary is very different than it was a week ago.

Euthanizing the pigs was never mentioned or even vaguely suggested by Judge Atack in her order. I believe the Judge was pressured to prematurely render a decision by Assistant District Attorney Scott Westbrook, Flagler County Administrator Craig Coffey, County Attorney Al Hadeed, and the wealthy, influential powers that be.

National Geographic was here at the Sanctuary two weeks ago for about five days. They are keeping an extremely close eye on the outcome of this case! Flagler County will be judged by this decision. Florida will be judged by this decision. The United States of America will be judged by this decision.

What would Gandhi think?

What will the world think? What do you think?
