What Makes It Past TSA Security 95% of the Time? Turns Out, Lots of Crazy Stuff…
The United States spends a massive amount of time and money on airport security, so recently, the TSA conducted an internal investigation with the help of Homeland Security to see if the $540 million they've spent on security equipment since 2009 is being properly used by their agents.
Much to the government's dismay, Homeland Security agents disguised as passengers were able to smuggle a whopping NINETY-FIVE PERCENT of mock weapons and explosives through security lines at major airports across the country.
In total, the TSA agents failed 67 out of the 70 tests.
In one instance, an undercover agent set off a metal detector, but the TSA agent couldn't locate the bomb hidden on his back during the follow-up pat down.
According to ABC News, Homeland Security didn't take these failures well:
"Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson was apparently so frustrated by the findings he sought a detailed briefing on them last week at TSA headquarters in Arlington, Virginia."
The TSA plans on implementing new rules and regulations in order to improve their agents' ability to spot weapons and explosives in checked items, carry-ons, and clothes.
