Dr. Martini: This just came out today, and I encourage others to not only  write their memories of Dr. Roberts and the effects of strong efforts to  protect people from aspartame, but to publish them in their local  newspapers as well, and then, once published, send them to you. Roberts, M.D., who for three decades  documented harm done by the artificial sweetener aspartame. Roberts died  at 88 in West Palm Beach recently. I recall how useful was his article,  "Aspartame Disease: An FDA Approved Epidemic," when I attempted to  convince the New Mexico Legislature to ban this neurotoxic carcinogen and  to create a Nutrition Council by statute to challenge the Food and Drug  Administration's errors in order to protect the health of all New  Mexicans.    Roberts treated diabetics long before aspartame's approval was forced  through the FDA by Donald Rumsfeld when he was president of G.D. Searle,  the aspartame patent holder, in the early Reagan years.    I used Roberts' article intensively, and he was gracious enough to write  to the members of several committees to corroborate the need to ban this  poison. The corporations involved took it seriously enough to hire some of  the top lobbyists to hammer the senators and representatives on how "safe"  aspartame is, "like mother's milk," they said, with rubber-stamped  approval in some 100 nations. Between the lies of the corporate lobbyists  and the chosen lack of information of many members of the Legislature, the  ban went nowhere.    Hundreds of people did, however, read Roberts' article and did quit using  those products, which number in the thousands. For example, they are in  almost all Wrigley chewing gums, diet sodas, table sweeteners and even  thousands of medications. Its effects are catastrophic on those with  neurodegenerative illnesses, and not just the lied-to diabetics who use  this poison instead of sugar.    Roberts was recognized for his superior efforts, including once having  been named as the best doctor in the United States in 1984 by a medical  journal. He was the author of 24 books. His wife, Carol, gave him six  children before she became mayor of West Palm Beach. Roberts was knighted  by the Order of St. George for his professional efforts, and his  "remarkable contributions by a master clinician and respected humanist  deserve the attention of every health professional and informed person."  (Frank Ray Rifkin, Publisher, Nutrition Health Review). President Barack  Obama's FDA commissioner, Dr. Margaret Hamburg, never answered Roberts'  letters, though.    Shocking to realize in retrospect that this great physician's counsel was  totally ignored by legislators, who apparently chose to listen to  corporate soothsaying from lobbyists. If one ever wanted to truly protect consumers in New Mexico, realize that  the best conceived efforts are going to fail in the face of corporate  lobbyists and misrepresentation. Nutrition Council?
