A majority of the brands of diet soda on the market today contain the sweetner Aspartame. Aspartame is a low calorie sweetner used in many products that are marketed at consumers who want sugar free or low calorie alternatives to sugar.
There are currently serious debates worldwide about the use of aspartame and it's use-fullness as a low calorie alternative. Aspartame was approved for use in 1981 by the FDA and has been under criticism for years with the debates heating up over the last decade. Interestingly, before aspartame was common place in many products, obesity in America stood at roughly 24%. Today, it is estimated that 54% of Americans are obese and 75% of adult Americans eat some form of diet food, which many contain aspartame.
Aspartame has been under fire in America and overseas about its safety too. A study in Europe
in 2005 revealed that the use of aspartame in lab rats led to an increased incidence of cancer. After a 2006 review of the information in the study, the FDA announced that there was insufficient evidence and no reason to revise the acceptable daily intake of aspartame.
The aspartame in diet soda contains potentially damaging ingredients like; glutamine which in excess can kill neurons in our brain, phenylalanine which in large doses has been linked to depression, diketopiperazine which has been seen in brain tumors, and methanol which simply is a deadly poison.
