| | | | ActHIB Vaccine Found to Contain Pieces of Glass Between 2013 and 2015
| | Published January 12, 2017 | Risk & Failure Reports In 2013, pharmaceutical firm Sanofi Pasteur issued no recalls after finding glass particles in vials of ActHIB, its conjugate vaccine containing Haemophilus b and meningococcal protein that is given to infants at two, four, six and between 15 and 18 months of age. The public was not informed until the end of 2016, when a small Pennsylvania newspaper, The Morning Call, began piecing together records of the incident, using government documents acquired through the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and published a series of articles describing what had happened.
| | | Australian Biotech Firm Develops New Sugar-Based Adjuvants
| | Published January 9, 2016 | Ingredients Vaxine Pty Ltd., a biotechnology company based in Adelaide, Australia, has developed new adjuvants to be used in vaccines. The firm has received funding from the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) to develop polysaccharide adjuvants, which are carbohydrates consisting of sugar molecules bonded together. Over the years, Vaxine has tapped into patented biotechnology to manufacture vaccines for seasonal influenza, hepatitis, malaria and SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome). More recently, it has produced a new vaccine for onchocerciasis, also known as river blindness.

| | Published January 6, 2017 | Opinion On December 21, 2013, The Huffington Post published an article entitled "Americans Have Little Faith in Scientists, Science Journalists: Poll." The article noted that, according to a HuffPost/ YouGov poll, "only 36 percent of Ameri-cans reported having 'a lot' of trust that information they get from scientists is accurate and reliable. Fifty-one percent said they trust that information only a little, and another 6 percent said they don't trust it at all." People trust science journ-alists even less, with only "12 percent of respondents said (saying) that they had a lot of trust in journalists to get the facts right in their stories about scientific studies."

| | Published January 7, 2017 | Government Following the perceived mishandling of the first diagnosed case of Ebola in the United States involving Thomas Eric Duncan of Liberia by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in 2014, there were calls within Congress and the media for the CDC director, Thomas Frieden, MD, to resign. It was believed that Dr. Frieden had not adequately commun-icated and enforced protocols (or that the protocols kept changing) for dealing with Ebola cases on U.S. soil, and that that had led to a nurse in Dallas, TX, contracting the disease from Mr. Duncan. We start to use human beings in biomedical research... for instance, we use fresh aborted fetuses on a daily basis in biomedical research. Scientists used embryos and women's eggs for stem cell research, and from there we move on to exploiting human beings for actual medical therapies.
