Hacked by the Government? Facebook Will Notify You
Washington, Oct 19 (EFE). – Facebook will notify its users if it has "a strong suspicion" that its accounts are being hacked by "state-sponsored actors," the company's Chief Security Officer Alex Stamos said.
The notification, which will appear when the user tries to access the social network, will be worded as follows: ""We believe your Facebook account and your other online accounts may be the target of attacks from state-sponsored actors.
Stamos said on a Facebook Security blog that, if the message does appear, the user is advised to activate the Login Approvals option, which sends a new security code every time the user's account is accessed by a new device or browser. Entering the code provides a new dimension of security.
"We decided to show this additional warning if we have a strong suspicion that an attack could be government-sponsored. We do this because these types of attacks tend to be more advanced and dangerous than others," Facebook's head of security said.
The social network, which has more than 1 billion active users worldwide, provided no further details about what kind of attacks might occur nor which governments in particular might carry them out. EFE
