Friend,
Are you eating baked goods with ingredients that have been linked to cancer? You might be…
A new EWG analysis has found potassium bromate – a possible cancer-causing food additive that is banned in a number of countries including Canada and the United Kingdom – in more than 86 baked goods and other food products.
It is added to flour to strengthen the dough, help it rise and give the finished bread an appealing white color.
Research has shown potassium bromate can damage DNA in human liver and intestinal cells. In animal studies, it's been linked to cancer and tumor development. That's why it's critical that we urge food companies to stop using it in their products immediately – it's simply not worth the risk.
Regulators in the United States and abroad have reached troubling conclusions about the risks of potassium bromate that you probably don't know about but should. In 1999, the International Agency for Research on Cancer determined that potassium bromate is a possible human carcinogen. The state of California lists it as a "known carcinogen" and requires food with potassium bromate to carry a warning label.
It's truly alarming that despite the growing evidence that potassium bromate could potentially cause serious harm to human health, it continues to be found in the products of such well-known brands including Hormel Foods, Weis and Goya.
Thanks for standing up for safer foods, Friend. With our voices united, we can make real change a reality.
Sincerely,
Jose Aguayo
Database Research Analyst, EWG
