Puppy found frozen to death

The discovery of a frozen puppy, abandoned in a crate in the Rose Lake State Wildlife Research Area in Michigan, has prompted the offering of a $5,000 reward, reported Friday's publication of the Detroit Free Press.

The Humane Society of the United States is hoping that the large reward will prompt someone to come forward with information about the person who is responsible for abandoning the pit bull mix pup inside of a filthy, feces covered crate. The pup is believed to have frozen to death when the temperatures plunged in January.

The HSUS released details of the heartbreaking discovery in a news release:

On January 25, a Lansing-area family and their dogs visited the Rose Lake State Wildlife Research Area, just northeast of Lansing, for a hike. Arriving in the parking lot, the young daughter ran to investigate a dog crate nearby and found a small pit bull-type puppy lying outside of it, dead, frozen and covered in feces.

In a press release, Jill Fritz, Michigan senior state director for the Humane Society of the United States, stated:

A person who would deliberately leave this small, defenseless puppy to suffer and die in these painfully cold temperatures is a danger to the community at large,
