The Book of Genesis describes a conversation between the creator and Adam, defining Adam's behavior. One stipulation was, "of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it, or thou shalt surely die."
Later, the creator formed a "help meet" for Adam who tempted him to disobey the creator's instructions, and they both ate the forbidden fruit.
