FDA Approves Experimental H5N1 Bird Flu Vaccine with

Reactive AS03 Adjuvant for U.S. Stockpile

by Patrice La Vigne

For some time now, vaccine researchers around the world have been on the prowl to create the perfect swine and bird flu vaccines that are both effective and safe, but have come up far short of perfection. In the process, they have added squalene-type "oil-in-water" adjuvants to some influenza vaccines, only to find that it can be risky business.

Squalene Adjuvants Never Licensed Before in U.S.

Squalene adjuvants, which ramp up the immune response, have never been licensed for use in the U.S. However, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) paved the way for a squalene adjuvant to be included in U.S. vaccines with its November 2013 approval of the first influenza A (H5N1) monovalent "bird flu" vaccine: GlaxoSmithKline's Q-Pan vaccine that contains the controversial oil-in-water emulsion adjuvant AS03.

Q-Pan vaccine will be added to the U.S. pandemic emergency vaccine stockpile. Although there is no H5N1 influenza pandemic underway to justify fast-tracked approval of the experimental AS03-adjuvanted bird flu vaccine, the speedy FDA approval comes amid mounting evidence that AS03 adjuvants are associated with development of serious autoimmune and neurological disorders like narcolepsy.

Debate Intensifies Over Letting Colorado Parents Opt Out of Child Vaccination. Colorado health officials and medical trade groups are supporting legislation to restrict the ability of parents to file a personal belief exemption to vaccination by requiring mandatory "education" by a doctor before the exemption can be filed. NVIC Executive Director Theresa Wrangham said, "What you're really trying to do is make it harder for them to exercise their right to say no, or their right to delay...from a legislative level, it's getting increasingly hostile. We're seeing a big push to restrict choice."

FDA Pertussis Vaccine Study Shatters Illusion of Vaccine-Induced Immunity.

A baboon study conducted by Food and Drug Administration (FDA) researchers revealed that DPT and DTaP vaccines can protect against developing whooping cough symptoms, but neither vaccine prevents infection or the ability to transmit infection. At two, four and six months of age infant baboons were given either acellular (DTaP) or a whole-cell (DPT) pertussis vaccine. The baboons had high antibody levels after getting vaccinated, but when exposed to B. pertussis at seven months old, they colonized B. pertussis and were able to infect other baboons even though they didn't get sick themselves. NVIC president and cofounder Barbara Loe Fisher said, "This study in infant baboons suggests that pertussis vaccine-acquired immunity has been an illusion. Although the vaccines may protect against severe B. pertussis clinical symptoms of the disease-such as paroxysmal coughing-they do not prevent colonization of B. pertussis bacteria and transmission of the infection to others."

Katie Couric Show Covers HPV Vaccine Questions.

In courageous and intellectually honest coverage of the debate about HPV vaccine safety and effectiveness, veteran broadcast journalist Katie Couric interviewed mothers, whose daughters were injured or died after Gardasil vaccinations. Emily Tarsell talked about how her healthy 21-year old daughter, Christina, suddenly died following a series of Gardasil shots in 2008 and Rosemary Mathis, co-founder of Sanevax, described her daughter's adverse Gardasil reaction. HPV vaccine researcher Dr. Diane Harper and Dr. Mallika Marshall presented opposing views about the vaccine.

Princeton University Offers Students Unlicensed Meningitis Vaccine.

Since March 2013, seven students and one visitor to Princeton University have contracted nonfatal cases of serogroup B strain meningococcal disease. Now, federal health officials have approved the import of Novartis AG's type B meningitis vaccine Bexsero for voluntary use by Princeton University students even though Bexsero is not licensed for use in the U.S. yet. New Jersey law requires students living in college dorms to receive a licensed meningococcal vaccine against four strains of meningitis bacteria but the B strain is not included. Bexsero targets the B strain and is used in Europe, as well as Australia, where the B strain accounts for 80 percent of meningitis cases. The first dose of Bexsero will be available Dec. 9-12 and the second dose in February. The University will cover the cost of the vaccine.

Utah Teen Dies After Flu Vaccination.

A healthy 19-year-old Utah high school student became "violently ill" with a headache and vomiting within 24 hours of receiving his first-ever flu shot. Chandler Webb was hospitalized with a diagnosis of encephalitis (brain inflammation) and doctors tested for many different kinds of infections before massive swelling in his brain led to his death 28 days later. A Utah State epidemiologist said there had been no flu shot-related deaths but cited "associations of encephalitis or encephalitis type illness following flu vaccine."  Chandler's mother spoke out about the fact that hospital physicians did not consider recent vaccination as a potential cause of the brain inflammation and did not give him steroids to reduce inflammation.

A teenage girl in France has filed a lawsuit against Sanofi and French health regulators over the Gardisil human papillomavirus vaccine, alleging that drug company and regulators violated "obvious safety obligations and breached the principles of precaution and prevention." Now 18, the girl received two doses of Gardasil at age 15 and was hospitalized for multiple sclerosis within months of receiving the vaccine. Gardasil is manufactured by Merck & Co., but is sold by Sanofi in Europe.

Four Generations of One Family Remain Unvaccinated Without Incident.

Jennifer Vaughn described her experience as part of a family in which four-generations  have remained unvaccinated since 1916. Her father died at the age of 93 and her mother at 84. She said they survived acute childhood diseases, which she thinks "served an important function in immune system development." She talked about the lack of chronic conditions, such as asthma, autism, diabetes and heart disease among family members, who are diverse in terms of professional and religious backgrounds.

Researchers Find Twitter Flu Talk Can Predict Disease Incidence.

Public health researchers are monitoring Twitter and found that Tweets mentioning "flu" or "influenza" are strongly related to the actual incidence of influenza-like illness in certain cities. In a study, researchers examined 161,821 tweets with the word "flu" and 6,174 tweets with the word "influenza" that originated within a 17-mile radius of 11 different cities from Aug. 31 through March 4, 2013. They found that these keyword-specific tweets were strongly linked to the real-world occurrences of flu-like illnesses in nine cities and predictive in five cities.

Parents Say Hospital Kidnapped Their Daughter After Admission for Flu.

A 15-year old girl originally diagnosed with mitochondrial disease has been detained in Boston Children's Hospital after being given a new diagnosis of somatoform disorder, a psychiatric disorder, when she was admitted for flu symptoms last year. Hospital doctors and child protective services workers  took custody from the parents within days of the new diagnosis, accusing the parents of "overmedicalizing" their child and "resistance towards recommended treatment plans." The parents said they followed the recommendations of their daughter's treating physicians. They are only allowed one hour-long visit with their daughter weekly.
