Warnings & Recalls for Topamax

  • In 2011 the FDA issued a letter to Ortho-McNeil Pharmaceuticals, Inc., that warned of the development of acute myopia and secondary angular closure glaucoma. In essence, the FDA found evidence that taking Topamax might, in some rare instances, cause severe and permanent vision loss.
  • In the same year, the FDA issued another warning to Ortho-McNeil, this time of the increased risk of cleft palate. Women of childrearing age are urged to discuss this issue with their doctors if considering treatment with Topamax.
  • Topamax side effects also contain a weight loss component, as well as the development of a notable lack of sweating and an increase in body temperature, possibly a very serious condition especially for children and the elderly.
