Last July, Fukushima Prefecture published a study stating that nearly 36 per cent of children in the nuclear disaster-affected region have abnormal thyroid growths. This is an extremely large number of abnormalities - some of which, experts say, pose a risk of becoming cancerous. In a discussion paper posted on the website of the journal Biogeosciences that 150,000 sq. kilometers of the Pacific Ocean is contaminated with Fukushima nuclear material: a 'Remarkable' amount was released and is continuing to be released, via leaking pipes or "other routes", with concentrations of radioactive cesium up to 3,500 times higher than the global fallout background levels off the coast of Fukushima, although the cruise track did not go closer than 30 km to take measurements. In other headspinning, yet encouraging news in the March 29, 2013 issue of the journal, Nuclear Intelligence Weekly article entitled: "Jaczko Calls for Phaseout in US: Says Plants Aren't Safe," 'former Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) Chairman, Gregory Jaczko says that the current fleet of operating plants in the US should be phased out because regulators can't guarantee against an accident causing widespread land contamination. In two key decisions last week Jaczko said the agency "damaged significantly" its international reputation for upholding safety and he accused the five commissioners of "just rolling the dice" in dealing with severe accidents.'
