Research published earlier this year indicates a strong link between multiple sclerosis and celiac disease. Specifically, the study found that one-tenth of multiple sclerosis patients and almost one-third of their first-degree relatives had celiac disease.
That study indicates a powerful association between the two conditions, which many people in the celiac community have suspected for some time. However, it doesn't tell the whole story. Other studies haven't found the same strong link.
So are the two conditions linked? If so, could gluten be the culprit in multiple sclerosis, just as it is in celiac disease? The answer is a definitive "maybe." I've explored the possibility in some depth in Gluten and Multiple Sclerosis - Potential Links. If you have MS in your family tree (or even if you don't), you might benefit from taking a look.
