Mitt Romney wins Wisconsin, Maryland, D.C. primaries 03 Apr 2012 Mitt Romney captured presidential primaries in Maryland, the District and battleground Wisconsin, the biggest prize of the day, to complete a momentum-building, three-contest sweep Tuesday that cemented his status as the almost certain Republican nominee [thanks to Karl Rove's super PAC]... With his campaign increasingly focused on President Obama and the general election, the former Massachusetts governor's victories in Maryland and the District were never in doubt. He won both by crushing margins. In Wisconsin, where Romney and rival Rick Santorum devoted most of their energies, the margin was narrower but nonetheless decisive.
US draws up plans for nuclear drones --Technology is designed to increase flying time 'from days to months', along with power available for weapons systems 02 Apr 2012 American scientists have drawn up plans for a new generation of nuclear-powered drones capable of flying over remote regions of the world for months on end without refuelling. The blueprints for the new drones, which have been developed by Sandia National Laboratories - the US government's principal nuclear research and development agency - and defence contractor Northrop Grumman, were designed to increase flying time "from days to months" while making more power available for operating equipment, according to a project summary published by Sandia. [Hopefully, civilians will still be able to blow them out of the sky!]
Supreme Court Ruling Allows Strip-Searches for Any Arrest 03 Apr 2012 The Supreme Court on Monday ruled by a 5-to-4 vote that officials may strip-search people arrested for any offense, however minor, before admitting them to jails even if the officials have no reason to suspect the presence of contraband. The procedures endorsed by the majority are forbidden by statute in at least 10 states and are at odds with the policies of federal authorities. According to a supporting brief filed by the American Bar Association, international human rights treaties also ban the procedures.
Supreme Court upholds jail strip searches, including for minor offenses --Breyer: Decision would legitimize searches conducted to harass or humiliate people for their political views 02 Apr 2012 The Supreme Court ruled Monday that those arrested for even minor violations may be strip-searched before being admitted to jail, saying safety concerns outweigh personal privacy rights. The court's conservatives ruled against a New Jersey man who was strip-searched after being mistakenly arrested on an outstanding warrant. The Supreme Court's 5 to 4 decision continued a trend that began after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks of giving jailers more leeway in searching those picked up even for the most minor offenses, such as expired licenses or noisy mufflers.
Teacher's aide fired for refusing to hand over Facebook password 02 Apr 2012 Kimberly Hester, a grade school teacher's aide in Michigan, was fired for refusing to hand over her Facebook password to her supervisors. Hester posted a picture of a co-workers' shoes and pants bunched around her ankles on Facebook in April 2011 with the caption, "Thinking of you." She posted the picture in jest, but a parent [nutjob] who's on her Facebook friend list saw the image and reported it to Frank Squires Elementary where Hester was employed, prompting the investigation. Teachers have gotten in trouble for Facebook status messages before, but in Hester's case, it's her refusal to hand over her password that actually got her fired.
Secret justice plan crumbles: Clegg says he'll block it, report by MPs and peers damns it and now ministers are close to a U-turn 03 Apr 2012 Plans for a huge extension of 'secret justice' are close to ruin after Nick Clegg warned the Prime Minister he cannot support them as they stand...  The Daily Mail has led criticism of Government plans to allow so-called 'closed material procedures', in which cases are conducted behind closed doors, in any civil or inquest hearing. Defendants or claimants will not be allowed to be present, know or challenge the case against them and must be represented by a security-cleared special advocate rather than their own lawyer. The procedure is currently used in tiny numbers of immigration and deportation hearings, but the Green Paper proposes giving ministers sweeping powers to order closed hearings whenever they feel the public interest is threatened.
Burned by traitor Sabu: Lulzsec Ryan Cleary Again in Jail for breaking his bail conditions 02 Apr 2012 The lawyer for a 19-year-old Briton Ryan Cleary - suspected of links to the hacking group Lulz Security - says her client's back behind bars for breaching his bail conditions. Cleary is accused of being a member of the hacktivist group LulzSec as it carried out a series of attacks on targets including the UK's Serious Organised Crime Agency, the CIA, and News International. He had apparently been trading e-mails with Hector Xavier Monsegur, a.k.a. Sabu, the recently outed LulzSec mastermind turned FBI informant. That was a direct violation of his bail agreement, which dictated that Cleary was to have no access to the Internet whatsoever.
FBI, NYPD Investigate New Terror Threat Graphic Mentioning NYC --Posting warns of al-Qaida's return to New York City 02 Apr 2012 A computer graphic warning that al-Qaida [al-CIAduh] will return soon to New York City has been posted on an internet site linked to the terror organization, and the NYPD and FBI say they are investigating. The graphic was posted on a radical overseas website and shows the city skyline and reads: "Al Qaeda Coming Soon Again in New York." NYPD spokesman Paul Browne said the graphic appeared on a site that has hosted al-Qaida material before and is what the NYPD Intelligence Division refers to as a Category 1 website, meaning it is heavily used by Jihadi and al-Qaida adherents [and its domain registration likely traces to Langley, VA].
French police launch new swoops on suspected Islamists 04 Apr 2012 Elite French police arrested 10 suspected Islamists in early morning raids on Wednesday in several cities, including Marseille, a police source said. The DCRI domestic intelligence service, supported by elite RAID and GIPN commandos, also carried out arrests in the southern cities of Pau and Valence, and the northeastern town of Roubaix, the source said. The raids follow the arrest of 19 people on March 30 a week after police snipers shot dead al Qaeda[al-CIAduh]-inspired gunman Mohamed Merah, who killed three Jewish school children, a rabbi and three soldiers in a spate of attacks around Toulouse. "Those arrested have a similar profile to Mohamed Merah," a local police source said. "They are isolated individuals, who are self-radicalized", the source said.
Man arrested for Planned Parenthood bombing 03 Apr 2012 A Wisconsin man faces federal charges after a bombing of a Planned Parenthood clinic in eastern Wisconsin. The FBI says 50-year-old Francis Grady is charged with arson of a building used in interstate commerce and intentionally damaging a facility that provides reproductive health services. Grady was arrested Monday evening. He is scheduled to make his first court appearance Wednesday.
Fukushima radiation headed across Pacific Ocean --Cesium radiation hundreds to thousands of times higher than would be expected naturally 02 Apr 2012 Radioactive material from the Fukushima nuclear disaster has been found in tiny sea creatures and ocean water some 186 miles (300 kilometers) off the coast of Japan, revealing the extent of the release and the direction pollutants might take in a future environmental disaster. In some places, the researchers from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) discovered cesium radiation hundreds to thousands of times higher than would be expected naturally, with ocean eddies and larger currents both guiding the "radioactive debris" and concentrating it.
Taliban torch six NATO fuel tankers in southwest Afghanistan 03 Mar 2012 Taliban militants have set fire to a convoy of NATO tankers carrying fuel for US-led foreign forces in southwestern Afghanistan, Press TV reports. Afghan officials said the militants destroyed at least six fuel tankers in an ambush in Dilaram district of Nimruz province late on Monday. Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid claimed that the militants destroyed nine tankers along with seven escorting vehicles.
Taliban claim downing American chopper in east Afghanistan 02 Apr 2012 The Taliban say they have shot down an American helicopter in Afghanistan's eastern province of Ghazni, Press TV reports. Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid claimed on Monday that at least 14 US soldiers were killed after the chopper was downed in Andar district on Sunday. He said that the militants targeted the helicopter with an "82mm rocket."
Germany illegally removes Press TV from SES Astra 03 Apr 2012 Under pressure from the German government, Munich media regulatory office (BLM) has made an illegal decision to remove Iran's international English Channel, Press TV, from SES Astra at 19:00 local time on Tuesday. In an email sent to the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) officials, Vice President of the SES Platforms Services, Stephane Goebel, noted that the BLM has asked Press TV be immediately removed from the platform. The move is clearly part of a plot orchestrated by the West to silence the voice of the Iranian English-language channel. [Exactly. That's why I can't link directly to Press TV items, or the CLG Newsletters get blocked.]
DOJ must explain Obama healthcare remarks 04 Apr 2012 A federal judge has ordered the U.S. Justice Department to write a letter describing the administration's position on the judiciary's power to overturn laws. A judge on the three-judge 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ordered the department to provide a letter of "at least three pages, single-spaced, no less," detailing the department's understanding of the judiciary's power to overturn unconstitutional laws by noon CDT Thursday, a United Press International review of an audio recording of the oral arguments indicated. Judge Jerry Smith, appointed by President Ronald Reagan in 1987, ordered the department Tuesday to make sure the letter specifically address comments President Barack Obama made Monday that he was "confident" the Supreme Court would not "take what would be an unprecedented, extraordinary step" of overturning the 2010 Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.
Appeals court upholds California affirmative action ban 02 Apr 2012 A U.S. appeals court upheld California's ban on the use of affirmative action in university admissions on Monday, reaffirming that public schools cannot base admission on race, gender or ethnicity. The ruling by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upholding so-called Proposition 209 comes as affirmative action resurfaces as a live issue at the top of the U.S. legal system. Proposition 209, passed by voters over 15 years ago, has prompted fierce debate for years in California.
Boston appeals court to hear challenge to federal Defense of Marriage Act 04 Apr 2012 An appeals court in Boston is set to hear arguments in a legal battle over a law that denies federal benefits to married gay couples. The 1996 federal Defense of Marriage Act defines marriage as a union between a man and a woman, and prevents the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriages. In 2010, a federal judge in Massachusetts declared a key section of the law unconstitutional. Gay marriage is legal there.
Zimmerman hires 2nd lawyer 04 Apr 2012 George Zimmerman has hired a second attorney who will work alongside his first lawyer, Craig Sonner, Local 6 has learned. Defense attorney Hal Uhrig has been practicing for more than 30 years in the Orlando area. He told Local 6 he feels comfortable that the evidence surrounding the shooting of Trayvon Martin does not support an indictment of Zimmerman. Uhrig says a lot of evidence has not been released to the public. He said Sonner is still the lead counsel, but he said he joined the team and brought him firm along, with their resources and staff.
Colorado farms planning for dry spell losing auction bids for water to fracking projects 03 Apr 2012 Front Range farmers bidding for water to grow crops through the coming hot summer and possible drought face new competition from oil and gas drillers. At Colorado's premier auction for unallocated water this spring, companies that provide water for hydraulic fracturing at well sites were top bidders on supplies once claimed exclusively by farmers. The prospect of tussling with energy industry giants over water leaves some farmers and environmentalists uneasy. [Start reading.]
Ask Congress to Fund the Fight to Save Bats 03 Apr 2012 It's another disastrous year for North American bats: White-nose syndrome, the bat-killing fungal disease that has been sweeping the country, has reached Alabama and Missouri. It continues to spread throughout the heartland, the core range of two endangered bat species. Nearly 7 million bats have died since the white-nose outbreak in 2006. The bats' best champions in Congress, Sens. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) and Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.), have requested $8.5 million for white-nose syndrome research and management. [Hopefully, the 8.5 million can be 'found,' since USociopaths have billions to spend on multiple illegal wars and occupations for Exxon Mobil and Blackwater.]
Olbermann compares himself to a $10 million chandelier at Current TV 04 Apr 2012 Keith Olbermann said he "screwed up" by taking a job with Current TV, but he plans to make the channel pay for firing him. In Olbermann's first TV interview since he was dismissed last week by Current, he was asked by David Letterman to assess his chances of getting any money due him. After reportedly signing a five-year, $50 million contract with Current, he was there less than a year. The studio for his show, "Countdown," was inadequate, Olbermann claimed, and he lost access to a car service because of an unpaid bill.
