A SHORT HISTORY OF COFFEE

Coffee was first discovered in Eastern Africa - according to legend - by a goat herder named Kaldi, who observed his goats acting unusually hyper after eating berries from a bush. As word spread of the fruit, monks began drying the berries and transporting them to distant monasteries. They immersed the berries in water, ate the fruit, and drank the liquid as a stimulate to stay awake during times for prayer.

Coffee then traveled through Turkey where it was first roasted and boiled in water. When coffee arrived in Europe in the late 1500s, Catholics were very fearful and critical of the drink, calling it "the drink of the Devil" (because of it's Muslim roots). After being banned by the Orthodox, Pope Clement VIII was petitioned to condemn it. To their surprise, the Holy Father, already a coffee drinker, blessed the coffee declaring it a truly Catholic beverage for all Christians to enjoy. "This Satan's drink is delicious...it would be a pity to let the infidels have exclusive use of it. We shall fool Satan by baptizing it."

Pope Clement VIII's blessing removed the biggest potential obstacle for the popularization of coffee in Europe. Less than 50 years later, coffee houses began popping up in Italy, and by 1675 there were some 3,000 coffee houses in England. By that time, coffee drinking was also quite popular in France where coffee houses soon became the meeting places for like minded individuals to discuss new ideas - a practice common in the US, especially where thinking and coffee-drinking Catholics dwell.

Another interesting account, when a vast Ottoman Turk army was marching on Vienna in 1683, a Capuchin Franciscan friar Blessed Marco d'Aviano was sent by the Pope to unite the outnumbered Catholic troops. Due to the prayers of Blessed Marco, the Turks fled (according to legend) leaving sacks of coffee which Catholics found too bitter to drink. So Blessed Marco sweetened it with honey and milk, which is where we get the drink Cappucino.

What we can learn from this is:
(1.) Coffee is a Catholic drink to be enjoyed by all.
(2.) True followers of St. Francis of Assisi will unite divided Catholics (and Christians) to fight the enemies of Christ and His Church.
(3.) As Blessed Marco solved the problem of bitter coffee in the 17th Century MONKROCK solves the problem of bitter (Mermaid) coffee in the 21st Century.
