Rosehip Offers New Hope for Millions of Rheumatoid Arthritis Sufferers
BARCELONA, Spain, June 18 /PRNewswire/ --
Danish scientists have made a major breakthrough in the battle against
Rheumatoid arthritis. Experts believe that a key ingredient contained in
a sub-species of rosehip could help to reduce tenderness in joints for
thousands of people in the UK who suffer from the debilitating disease(1).
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease more serious than
osteoarthritis, which is caused by wear and tear of the joints. Over
nine million people in the UK have arthritis(2) and there are around
12,000 new RA cases a year(3). This latest study which shows amazing
results, is a continuation of extensive research into anti-inflammatory
efficacy of GOPO(r) - the active compound contained in the product known
as Litozin.
In a double-blind randomised controlled trial which took place in Berlin
and Denmark last year, patients with RA received treatment with 5g daily
rose-hip (GOPO(r)) or placebo for 6 months in addition to usual care.
The patients were initially examined by a physician and seen again after
3 and 6 months. During the trial, the overall tenderness of painful
joints was seen to reduce considerably and over-all quality of life was
greatly improved.
Speaking during the European League against rheumatoid arthritis (EULAR)
this week in Barcelona (13-16th June), Biochemist Dr Kaj Winther, one of
the leading experts behind the recently completed trial said; "The trial
was more positive than we had ever expected and the findings are
incredibly exciting. This new evidence shows that the anti-inflammatory
and anti-oxidant compounds in rose-hip have quite a wide therapeutic
effect. Rose-hip could potentially make a huge difference towards
improving patients' lives'.'
The usual drugs used for treating the inflammation of RA are
non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), disease modifying drugs
(such as methotrexate or sulphasalazine and more recently the biologics
including those called anti-TNF therapies) and corticosteroids (which
may be used orally as prednisolone or via joint injections). However
many of these RA treatments are often attributed to various
side-effects. All NSAIDs for example may cause aggravation of blood
pressure and ankle swelling (by causing fluid retention) as well as more
serious side effects if used over a prolonged period such as stomach
ulcers and bleeding(4).
Due to the drying process that is needed to isolate the active
anti-inflammatory compound from the sub-species of rose-hip, GOPO(r) is
not available in a normal diet and can only be taken in the form of a
food supplement. LitoZin(r) Joint Health, from Lanes, is the only
supplement containing GOPO(r) and is specifically formulated for
maintaining joint health.
