Bleeding Gums? Dry Mouth? Bad Breath? Coated Tongue? An easy fix!
By Jan Slama
Many years ago, my dentist told me that once we pass about Age 35, the bacteria which causes cavities in our mouth dies off. After that, we no longer get new cavities, though we can still lose fillings, need root canals from earlier damage, etc. Since I am now over 60, I have certainly found this to be true. I haven’t had a new cavity in many, many years. I have, however, experienced greater gum problems, needed dental repairs, etc. But, I have watched a cavity remain the same for years. It hasn’t grown and it doesn’t ache. It’s just there.
Past the age of 35, we need to become more conscious of our intestinal health, which directly affects the health of our mouth, which is what causes the bleeding gums, dry mouth, bad breath and coated tongue. Our digestive tract is not merely our large and small intestine. Our digestive tract begins in the mouth, with our teeth and saliva. If you don’t chew your food well and mix it with enough saliva to start the digestion process, you won’t reap the nutrients from your food. When you don’t reap the nutrients, you only get fat, not healthy! And that includes the supplements you take! You MUST have good digestion to be healthy.
The digestive tract proceeds down the esophagus to and through the stomach. If your stomach isn’t making enough acid (or too much acid some believe, so they take Rolaids or Tums or something stronger!) then your food also doesn’t digest. If you don’t have enough digestive enzymes from the food you are eating the digestion process is interrupted. By the way, what most of us identify as TOO MUCH stomach acid is in reality, too little. As we age, we make less and less acid, so our body must recirculate what it has made, and that’s when the back flush or acid reflux occurs. If we have enough acid to digest properly, we don’t get heartburn/acid reflux. Hydrochloric Acid, sold at most health food stores, is the easy answer. 3 capsules with each meal for a while…maybe a few weeks…will solve the problem. I used to have acid reflux ALL the time. I bought Rolaids by the JUG! Since starting Hydrochloric Acid capsules about 4 years ago, I haven’t had a problem since. On the very rare occasion I take three capsules with meals now, but only if I happen to think of it. The problem has been solved.
Next, the food which has been chewed and mixed with saliva and processed with sufficient acid and digestive enzymes, then moves into the intestine where it travels for about 30 feet, giving the villi, the little flinger like projections which protrude into your colon, a chance to snag the nutrients as they pass by. If the villi are covered with mucus or worse, if they are broken off and you aren’t getting nutrients, then the digestion process is again stalled and your health suffers.
The digestive tract finally ends at the anus, whose most common problem seems to be hemorrhoids. It is one long connected path, and whatever goes wrong in any part of that will eventually affect the rest of it. Thus, you can see why your mouth is so important to good digestion. Strong, healthy, well-rooted teeth, are important to the whole process.
The primary oral health problem most of us have and are not even aware of is an overgrowth of fungus in our lower or large intestine. This fungus, called Candida Albicans, is a necessary part of our digestive process and one of the many organisms residing in our colon to enable digestion. It has an important function and must not and cannot be eradicated. To reach the overgrowth stage and to migrate from our intestine up through the stomach, esophagus and into the mouth can take years.
The real problem arises when we eat our wonderful American Diet, which consists of lots of carbs, sweet things, sugar, baked goods, cakes, puddings, Jello, breads, candies, soda pops, sweetened drinks, Slurppies, sweetened teas, etc. Besides all these which are easily identifiable as bad nutrition, we also eat vegetables high in sugar and carbs such as peas, corn, carrots, etc. We need carbs. They provide energy for us and transport nutrients for our body’s use, but they also feed Candida. That would normally be easily controllable, because God put the proper balance of bacteria into our intestines to eat the “bad” yeast ones and keep them under control. However, Modern Medicine, in their omnipotent wisdom, has seen fit to destroy good and bad bacteria alike, by using their antibiotics for every little notion of something wrong—whether it is bacterial or not! Antibiotics destroy ONLY bacteria. Not Fungus, not viruses. Only Bacteria! But they destroy both good and bad bacteria, and there are lots of good bacteria which inhabit our colon that help us to digest. We need these good bacteria. They are vital to our health. But anyone who has been on antibiotics several times over their life has effectively wiped out the good bacteria normally inhabiting their colon, so the Candida overgrows, moves up into the stomach, then into the esophagus, and finally into the mouth, infecting the tongue and gums. Pink vibrant gums are important to holding the teeth in place. The tongue should be pink with well-defined taste buds. Bleeding gums or a tongue that is coated with white goo or deeply lined is an indication of oral problems that indicate Candida and demand attention.
Want to see the proof with your own eyes? Do this test: First thing in the morning, before you swallow, upon rising, gather spittle in your mouth and spit it onto the top of a cold glass of water. Make sure you use a glass glass so you can watch what happens in the water. Before the hour is up, and sometimes immediately, if you have a really heavy load of candida, the spittle will start to form long, gray, root-like strings headed for the bottom of the glass. The faster it happens the more you have. If the spittle lies in frothy bubbles on top of the water and doesn’t make any roots, then you do not have a candida overgrowth in your mouth, esophagus, stomach and intestines.
So, if you do have this condition, and 80% of the people in the USA do have it because of our high carb diets, then you need to treat yourself for Candida. You can find my article on that at http://vibrantenergy.webs.com/candida.htm
As for how to clean up your oral health, start with tongue scraping to remove as much of the white goo as possible, using any straight edged object such as a table knife. Floss between your teeth well, and alongside the teeth into the gums. Brush your teeth (see note below), tongue, cheek walls, and roof of your mouth thoroughly with baking soda which is effective at killing candida. The more you can scrub loose and remove the healthier your mouth will be. Then, mix a mouth wash of 1 tsp. of bleach in 1 cup of water. Swish this thoroughly between your teeth and through your gums, gargling it back into your throat. Don’t swallow it. Bleach is NOT good for your insides! But it does kill fungus on contact, so swishing and spitting is very effective. Soak your toothbrush in the same kind of solution between brushings, so that you aren’t transferring candida back into your mouth and reinfecting it. Twice daily brushing and flossing and mouthwash will have your oral problems solved quickly.
Because the problem, the Candida fungus, is still in your throat, esophagus, etc. it will return to your mouth, so you must treat the systemic problem in your intestines. Please remember this originated in your intestines! It has traveled a long way, continuing perhaps even up into your sinuses, as well, which causes sinus infections. Brushing and cleaning your mouth twice a day is going to clean up your teeth and gums and you won’t have the continual bleeding, bad breath, loose teeth, etc. But you will need to deal with the systemic problem created in your intestines, if you hope to have the good health we all desire. Please refer to the candida article on my website for the actual systemic resolution to this problem. Candida is very controllable and your life can be so different. Read the list of symptoms at the beginning of the candida article above and imagine your life without these. It’s possible. I did it and you can, too.
v Electric toothbrushes are no more effective than the manual variety, according to research. However, "rotation-oscillation" electric toothbrushes out-performed manual brushing, removing around 7% more plaque and leading to 17% less gum disease than manual brushes.
