2: More important is that the engine of the Gulf Stream is NOT the Gulf itself, but cold water sinking to deeper levels near the arctic. That pulls warmer water from the equatorial region near South America to the north. The water from the Gulf is only a small part of this current. The warmer climate before 2009 caused by high sun activity resulted in more sweet water due to melting ice, which had a negative influence on the Gulf Stream engine. Colder winters will enhance the Gulf Stream engine, since the amount of melting will decrease, and the water itself will also get colder near the arctic!
3: I checked the sea water temperatures and temperature anomalies, and as far as I can see, the Gulf stream is alive and running.
4: I live in the Netherlands and indeed, it is a abnormal cold winter here! But this also happened last year, BEFORE the Gulf problem!
5: The cold winters are caused by low Sun activity, for years the activity is extremely low. It is increasing now a little, but not enough to say that the next Sun cycle is really starting. This results in world wide cold weather, not only in the region affected by the Gulf stream. The cold weather in the US has nothing to do with the Gulf stream, except mayby the other way around: a good functioning Gulf stream results in a cold southward stream along the US east coast, only increasing the cold weather there.
So apparently we are dealing with a fear creating hoax again.
Greetings, Pieter
