One of the things you can do if you have a yeast infection is follow a Candida diet. This involves 3 stages:
Cutting out foods and detoxing your body.
Treating the Candida and eliminating it then re-introducing foods.
Put good bacteria back into your body as a prevention step.
This article will look at the first half of stage one(candida detox) and the second part of this article
Stage 1b – Candida Diet will look at what you need to do if you wish to follow a Candida diet. Stage Two and Three will be in further separate articles and another article will have some recipe ideas for you to use if you are stuck for meal and snack ideas.
Stage One is the hardest part of a Candida diet but it is essential in order to get rid of the excess Candida fungus in your body. This first stage should last between two to three weeks and by the end of it you will have dealt with factors that make you more at risk to Candida, you will have cleansed and detoxed your body and finally made major changes in what you eat and drink.
Dealing with potential triggers
A Candida diet is not just about cutting out foods. That is one aspect of it but not the whole. As well as a poor diet being one of the possible triggers for a yeast infection, there are many others and these also need to be eliminated where possible; candida detox is a very important step prior to your diet. Remember some triggers you have control over, some you may not. As with the food you will be cutting out, if it is necessary there will be time later to re-introduce them once the infection is clear. Triggers that you need to consider include:
Antibiotics – prolonged courses kill the good bacteria that control the growth of the fungus, thereby leading to a yeast infection.
Lifestyle
Diet
Hormones
Oral contraceptives
Stress
Smoking
Hygiene
Diabetes (if uncontrolled)
Cleansing/Detox
Our colons perform an essential duty for us, clearing out the waste, once nutrients and so on have been taken from whatever we put into our body. Sometimes though, fecal matter can get stuck there and then toxins are slowly released into your body. If you have a yeast infection this can become a breeding area for the Candida, which also releases toxins of its own. A cleanse will clear out the candida, the toxins and make it a less hospitable place for Candida to breed.
There are several options you can choose from depending on your preference. The goal of this is to clean out debris and yeast from the intestines making it easier for the treatment stage to reach anything that is left over.
Cleansing that includes colonic irrigation
To those that have never had a colonic irrigation it may be a bit daunting but there isn't anything to fear or worry about. Sessions usually last around 45 minutes. They start with a firm but gentle massage of the lower stomach and then a small sterile tube is inserted up the rectum and warm water is passed through it to the colon. Those that have it done say the first time was a little uncomfortable but after that all they feel is a slightly warm sensation. Then the water along with fecal matter it loosens passes out and this is repeated several times. You can either visit an expert every other day or you can try the kits that are available at pharmacies to try at home yourself.
This option has two parts to it, fasting and the irrigation itself. If you work full time you will need some time off as this should take a week to do and can leave you feeling weakened. A 7 day colon cleanse would be 7 days of something like this:
Breakfast: Detox drink
Snack: Broth soup
Midday: (to do just an alternate days) colonic irrigation with a probiotic afterwards
Lunch: Detox drink
Snack: Broth soup
Dinner: Detox drink
Snack: Liver flush drink
Throughout the week you also need to drink a lot of water to keep flushing out the toxins and to stay well hydrated.
Warning: If you have other health issues discuss cleansing and fasting with a doctor first.
Recipe: Vegetable Broth
Ingredients
3-4 potatoes, peeled and diced
1 small onion, diced
3-4 stalks of fresh grown celery, thinly sliced
1-2 fresh grown carrots, thinly sliced
Cayenne pepper (optional)
1 large handful of greens such as kale or chard, chopped
Method
In 3 liters of pure or distilled water put all ingredients (organic vegetables is best). Bring to the boil and then allow to simmer for 20 minutes. Then strain and throw away the vegetables so that just a broth remains. (Of course if there are other members in your household you can leave the vegetables for them).
Recipe: Detox drink
Ingredients
1 cup of water
1 Tsp Psyllium Husk powder
1 Tsp Bentonite Clay
Method
Psyllium and Bentonite clay are great for detox as the clay soaks up toxins and the Psyllium encourages you to empty waste from your colon! However they do not mix easily with water so will need a few seconds of shaking and then down it quickly. Follow the detox drink with a large glass of water.
Recipe: Liver Flush drink
1 cup water
1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
1 clove of garlic
Small chunk of ginger
Just blend all the ingredients together and drink.
Cleansing without the colonic irrigation
This will still clean you out just not as well. All this involves is following the above cleanse but removing the alternate day colonic irrigation sessions.
Detoxing with a Candida diet
If a fast is not an option for you there are still ways you can detox. Cutting out foods in your diet that have lots of additives and chemicals is an important step, while still drinking the detox drink and liver flush. For 7 to 14 days you need to:
Eat organic raw salads or steamed vegetables only
Three times a day drink a detox drink (these should be drunk on an empty stomach so drink at least an hour after eating and wait at least an hour after before eating again
At the end of the day drink the liver flush drink (at least 2 hours after the last detox drink)
Do not eat starchy vegetables like potatoes, yams, squash and so on
