Toxic Mercury - The Beautiful Poison

Toxic Mercury

It's hard to believe that something this beautiful - hidden in those
toxic mercury amalgam fillings in your mouth - may be poisoning you.

The Dangers of Mercury: 8-Minute Video

Are you slowly killing yourself in your efforts to improve your health?

You brush your teeth regularly, rinse with a strong mouthwash, even floss now and then. And, when these efforts fail, you get your cavities filled with “silver”.

Most people would be shocked to discover that those “silver” fillings are composed of over 50% mercury - the most toxic non-radioactive metal known to man - More deadly than lead, cadmium or even arsenic.

In fact, as you read this, you are probably slowly poisoning yourself with mercury leaking from those “silver” fillings.

Over 200 million Americans have had this highly toxic metal placed in their mouths, creating what many leading researchers believe to be a “toxic time bomb”.

The World Health Organization has identified dental amalgam as the major source of mercury contamination in the human body.

What's most puzzling is that mercury amalgam is legally treated as a highly dangerous material before it is placed in your mouth and after it is removed. However, for almost 200 years traditional dentists have insisted that, once the mercury is mixed into an amalgam and placed in your mouth, it becomes a safe and stable substance.

We now know that this is absolutely false. This poisonous metal implanted in your teeth is continuously leaking into your body, where it accumulates over time.

Some experts believe that up to 90% of Americans are adversely affected by low-level mercury poisoning.

One of the damaging effects of low-level mercury poisoning is suppression of the immune system. Mercury leaking from your fillings could play a part in almost every illness, both major and minor, including cancer and chronic fatigue syndrome.

There are almost fifty signs and symptoms that are often seen in low-level mercury toxicity.

Overview of Toxic Mercury-Amalgam:
Issues & Articles

The articles in this section will introduce you to the concerns being expressed, around the world, about the safety of mercury amalgam fillings and the scientific research that is fueling the movement to ban them.

The Institute for Biological Dentistry is proud to present this information, because we believe you have the right of
choice and informed consent when you make health care decisions.

Quick Facts About Mercury Amalgam Fillings

Poison Symbol - dispalyed on any consumer product containing Mercury

Amalgam, Silver Amalgam, High-Copper Amalgam... they all consist of approximately 50% Mercury and according to a 1991 study by the W.H.O. (World Health Organization) they release 3-17 micrograms of Mercury into the bloodstream everyday. The safe level established by the EPA for Mercury exposure is 10 micrograms per day.

The government requires special handling of Mercury because it has been definitively linked to birth defects, autoimmune illnesses and neurological illnesses including depression. Mercury can cross the blood-brain and placenta barriers and startling new research has linked the presence of Mercury in the brain to one of the major structural markers in Alzheimer's disease.

All truckers transporting Mercury must use this sign so emergency personel can be prepeared to deal with this toxic substance.

Despite solid evidence from around the world, Amalgam is still the filling material of choice for many dentists. More Facts About Mercury & Amalgam Fillings

1.

Mercury is the most toxic, non-radioactive element on Earth.

2.

A silver colored mercury amalgam filling normally contains 52% mercury.

3.

On average, an amalgam filling weighs 1 gram and contains 1/2 gram of mercury.

4.

The typical adult carries ten amalgam fillings containing about 5 grams of mercury.

5.

1/2 gram of mercury in a ten acre lake would warrant issuance of a fish advisory for the lake.

6.

Running shoes with mercury lights in their heels were banned by the Minnesota Legislature in 1994 because they contained a 1/2 gram of mercury in them and this was considered dangerous to public health.

7.

Germany, Austria, Denmark and Sweden ban the use of mercury amalgam fillings in pregnant women and children and complete bans are scheduled to be phased in.

8.

The state of California requires this warning in all dental offices with a staff of 10 or more that use mercury amalgam fillings. "The people of the state of California have determined that the use of dental amalgam causes birth defects and other health problems."

9.

Legislation is now being proposed in Minnesota for a similar "Informed Consent" law to protect all patients.

Please Note - The Maryland State Board of Dental Examiners legally requires that the following statement be placed on any information provided to the public concerning the dangers of mercury amalgam:

"The National Institutes of Health has determined that there are no verifiable systemic health benefits resulting from the removal of mercury amalgams."

An Owners Guide to Silver/Mercury Fillings

Mercury is a heavy metal and poison, proven to be more toxic than lead or arsenic. If silver fillings are in your mouth, mercury is in your body. Some bodies can cope with the extra stress and naturally detoxify the mercury.. other bodies become overwhelmed and suffer disorders and break-downs of various body systems.

Since it's first use, nearly 160 years ago there has been controversy over dental amalgam, or "silver fillings." Amalgam fillings are made of mixed metals and bound together with mercury, which comprises approximately 50% of each filling. Despite scientific research which proves mercury leaks into the body in dangerous amounts from these fillings, bans in some countries, and the American Dental Associations own Materials Council recommendation that amalgam filling material be handled as a toxic material, the ADA still claims these fillings are safe and benign...

Learn about both sides of the mercury amalgam controversy in this article as well as a historical background about the development of dental materials, their health effects on the body and how to return to health.

Why I Stopped Placing Mercury Amalgam Fillings in 1987

It has been more than 17 years since I placed mercury amalgam in a patient's mouth. I decided in 1987 to never place another. Up to that point, I believed, along with almost all other dentists, that the 50% mercury content in these mercury amalgams was safe. My dental education and the information being written by the American Dental Association agreed on this “fact”.

But in 1987 that all changed. I had read a number of reports showing how dangerous mercury from amalgam fillings was to the dentist and the dental staff. These reports indicated that extensive care had to be taken when handling and disposing of the mercury amalgam. I certainly didn't want to jeopardize the health of my staff or myself. Then it occurred to me, if this stuff is so dangerous to the dental staff, wouldn't it also be unhealthy for the patient?

Autism: A Novel Form of Mercury Poisoning?

Autism is a syndrome characterized by impairments in social relatedness and communication, repetitive behaviors, abnormal movements, and sensory dysfunction. Recent epidemiological studies suggest that autism may affect 1 in 150 U. S. children. Exposure to mercury can cause immune, sensory, neurological, motor, and behavioral dysfunctions similar to traits defining or associated with autism, and the similarities extend to neuroanatomy, neurotransmitters, and biochemistry. Thimerosal, a preservative added to many vaccines, has become a major source of mercury in children who, within their first two years, may have received a quantity of mercury that exceeds safety guidelines. A review of medical literature and U.S. government data suggests that (i) many cases of idiopathic autism are induced by early mercury exposure from Thimerosal; (ii) this type of autism represents an unrecognized mercurial syndrome; and (iii) genetic and non-genetic factors establish a predisposition whereby Thimerosal's adverse effects occur only in some children.

New Research Connects Mercury to Alzheimer's Disease

Scientists have shown that trace amounts of mercury can cause the type of damage to nerves that is characteristic of the damage found in Alzheimer's Disease. The level of mercury exposure used in the test was well below levels found in many humans with mercury/silver amalgam dental fillings. The research conducted at the University of Calgary Faculty of Medicine found that the exposure to mercury caused the formation of neurofibrallar tangles, which are one of the two diagnostic markers for Alzheimer's Disease. Previous research has shown that mercury can cause the formation of the other Alzheimer's Disease marker, amyloid plaques. The scientists also exposed the test nerves to other elements, including aluminum, but found that only mercury caused the damage consistent with Alzheimer's Disease.

Is Mercury Toxicity an Autoimmune Disorder?

The diagnostic arena now occupied by autoimmune disorders provides us with terms that could be best described as "alphabet soup." Such problems include RA (rheumatoid arthritis), HT (Hashimoto's thyroiditis), HAD (human adjuvant disease), MS (multiple sclerosis), ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or, more commonly, Lou Gehrig's disease) and MCTD (mixed connective tissue disease).

Should we now add MT (mercury toxicity)?

These conditions plus others, such as Crohn's disease, Raynaud's disease, systemic candidiasis, diabetes, and even Alzheimer's disease are now believed by many to be autoimmune disorders.

Mercury and The Law

After years of litigation, California dentists are finally required to notify their patients that mercury fillings are a health hazard.

Disclosure at last! On November 15, 2000, the judge of the Superior Court of California in San Francisco signed a consent decree that marks a true milestone in California's dental treatment. The link between birth defects and silver-mercury dental fillings will have to be disclosed to California dental patients after February 15, 2001.

In a landmark decision, the judge ruled that, according to Proposition 65, patients must be informed of this connection. This is a 180-degree turnaround from the American Dental Association's policy - still current - that silver-mercury amalgams are safe and that any dentist who suggests otherwise to[their] patients can have [their] license revoked.

Rising Mercury

Home Editorials - from the Bangor Daily News -- Thursday, Apr 12, 2001

Despite protests from the American Dental Association, any country that seriously discusses doing away with mercury thermometers because of their potential impact on health cannot be long from restricting the use of mercury dental fillings.

Congress will soon work on the question while Maine reviews LD 1409, a concept bill that seeks to examine the long-term effects of these fillings and the steps the state should take to protect residents and the environment. For one expert who testified last week, the answers are clear. Dr. Boyd Haley, chairman of the Department of Chemistry at the University of Kentucky, concludes that normal body loads of mercury in older adults produce two diagnostic hallmarks for Alzheimer's disease...
