East Meets West: Effective Treatment for Prostate Problems

Discomfort from Prostate Enlargement Can Be
    Drastically Reduced with Acupuncture

Between ages 40 and 59, 60% of men already encounter an enlarged prostate or benign prostate hypertrophy (BPH). Seventy five percent of men near age 60 have this condition. Only one in five men at the age of 80 or older will not incur BPH. Many men may not have any symptoms at beginning, but when the gland enlarges enough it can result in a gradual squeezing of the urethra and cause a weak urinary stream, difficulty starting urination, frequent urination and frequently awakening at night to urinate. Blockage of the urethra from BPH may lead to repeated urinary tract infections, a sudden inability to urinate or gradual bladder and / or kidney damage.

Western treatments for prostate problems like BPH can consist of pharmaceutical drugs such as Flomax, which is an alpha-adrenergic blocker. As with most drugs, Flomax can cause side effects that may impair thinking or reactions.

According to Karen Siegel Propis, MPH, MS, RD, LD, LAc, “Patients should get a firm western diagnosis and then seek treatment options. I am often referred patients by physicians and always defer to them when it comes to medication.” Studies have confirmed that acupuncture is as effective as drug therapy treatments, and often used in combined treatments plans. Acupuncture in conjunction with herbology (herbal medicine) can also help wean patients off medication. As men age, the prostate may become a source of concern. The most common prostate problems are Prostatitis (inflammation) and BPH (prostate enlargement). Chinese medicine has herbs and herbal formulas that are effective in treating these conditions. The formulas target the kidney, bladder and urethra to promote urination, reduce smooth muscle pain and reduce the chance of developing kidney stones. Herbs are effective in treating bacterial infection, difficult urination, night-time urination, reducing toxins and promoting general circulation as well.

Many men express concern about where the needles are placed to treat prostate problems. Point locations are along the leg and foot, stomach and back and are not painful. The points are chosen along channels that go to the areas being treated rather than local points at the area.

“Acupuncture is an effective way to bring the body back into balance,” remarks Karen. It is a more than 2000 year-old Chinese system of healing that places very fine needles in strategic areas of the body to promote healing of its unhealthy parts. The flow of Qi (chee) and blood through established channels or meridians in the body is stimulated by placing a small needle in a specific area to bring more Qi and blood to the painful area. Qi is not definable in western medical terminology. It signifies movement or energy. The reason for most ailments is some kind of blockage in the body; the system is gridlocked. Stimulating the Qi and blood opens avenues to allow the body to heal itself.
