A New Moratorium on Research Into Engineered Avian Flu: What It Means for Science

Is some research so dangerous it shouldn't be done at all?

In an unusual move, an international coalition of flu researchers agreed last week to a hiatus on work surrounding a highly contagious, mammal-adapted version of the avian influenza virus. Research on transmissible H5N1 flu will halt, and two manuscripts describing how to modify the virus won’t be published, at least not yet.

The voluntary pause came a few weeks after an American advisory panel recommended censoring the research in the name of security. So it raises an interesting question — is some research just too dangerous to pursue? Not just for the scientists conducting it, but for the public in a post-9/11 world?

Voluntarily pausing science in the name of safety and public solace is certainly not common, but then neither is a potentially groundbreaking study into the mechanisms that could make bird flu more potent and more deadly. The decision, announced in Science and Nature, indicates influenza researchers want to quell public fears, but they also don’t want to censor their work.

Dr. Nancy Cox, chief of the Influenza Division at the Centers for Disease Control, said flu researchers will confer during the hiatus about how to proceed, including making modifications to security procedures or the biosafety requirements for labs doing this work. Flu is dangerous, but it’s not nearly as deadly as some of the other pathogens CDC studies, she noted.

“If you think of Ebola and Marburg, and some other pathogens with a high lethality, which are worked on in the lab and for which there aren’t antivirals and there aren’t vaccines, influenza falls into a little bit different category,” she said.

One of the two main labs at the center of this debate does not have a Biosafety Level 4 facility, the highest security level reserved for the most deadly pathogens. Issues like that will be a topic of discussion during the 60-day break.

“(The hiatus) is unusual, but because there was so much concern about the work, it was an appropriate action on the part of the laboratories that are involved in this type of research,” Cox said.

It does have some precedent, however, in a 1975 conference in which scientists agreed to pause research on recombinant DNA. That meeting, known as the Asilomar Conference, was organized to quell public concern, but also to allow scientists to agree among themselves about how best to proceed. At the time, recombinant DNA technology — the process of taking DNA from one organism, and recombining it with DNA from another — was still brand-new and researchers were still uncertain about the risks.

“There are always concerns about misuse of the products of research,” said Jeffrey Kahn, deputy director of the Berman Institute of Bioethics at Johns Hopkins University. “Think about nanotechnology as another example, or genetically modified food. We like the benefits of these new technologies, but we always worry about he misuse, the misapplication, or the unintended consequences. The trick is, how do we oversee and prevent problematic outcomes, while still realizing the benefits of the technology?”

The flu moratorium stems from two separate studies prepared by scientists in the U.S. and the Netherlands (the latter having been funded by the U.S. National Institutes of Health) investigating how the avian influenza virus could mutate and become transmissible among mammals, including us. The main paper is by virologist Ron Fouchier of Erasmus Medical Centre in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, who engineered the genome of H5N1 to make a version that easily spreads among ferrets, the closest animal model of the human response to flu. After 10 virus generations, the mutated virus became airborne, infecting healthy ferrets who were housed near a sick one. The work was important because it disproves a previous assumption that avian flu could not easily adapt to mammals, requiring drastic changes to the virus’ genetic makeup that would render it unable to reproduce.

In a manuscript prepared last year, Fouchier describes his methods and processes, hoping to shed light on the ways in which the virus could mutate naturally. A separate paper by virologist Yoshihiro Kawaoka at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the University of Tokyo had similar results. The papers could help virologists look for vaccines or antiviral treatments. But some observers fear the work could create an extremely potent bioweapon, should the mutated virus escape from the lab — or should the work be replicated by someone with ill intentions. Interestingly, the moratorium letter (online here) does not address the latter concern, focusing instead on lab procedures.

“We would like to assure the public that these experiments have been conducted with appropriate regulatory oversight in secure containment facilities by highly trained and responsible personnel to minimize any risk of accidental release,” the letter reads.

The Asilomar Conference also led to a hiatus and had similar goals, as scientists sought to regulate themselves before government bodies did it for them. Researchers were able to shape their own rules, so when the National Institutes of Health did create an oversight committee, scientists thought it was legitimate, recalled Alexander Capron, a professor at the University of Southern California and co-director of the Pacific Center for Health Policy and Ethics. Capron was a participant at Asilomar and sees several parallels between that meeting and the flu debate, he said. Along with mitigating physical risks in the lab, scientists need to balance the risks of publishing their research with the risks of not publishing it, and the precedent that would set.

“It’s much easier to ask what you can do to prevent physical risks from manifesting, than what you can do to prevent knowledge risks,” he said. “The only surefire way is to not disseminate the knowledge at all.”

But no one really wants that, said Kahn, who noted the public health value of understanding how H5N1 works.

“It’s really important to know that for the purpose of planning and preparedness, but it has all these potential risks associated with it,” he said. “If there weren’t any good scientific reason to do it, or good policy, we’d say, ‘It’s just mad scientist stuff.’ But it isn’t.”

Most researchers agree that after the moratorium, the work must go on.

“Understanding why some animal viruses jump into humans, and can be transmitted from human to human and others don’t, is one of the central questions we are trying to understand in the field of influenza,” said Cox, the CDC scientist. “There are probably multiple different pathways. Influenza is a very simple organism, but it’s also very complex in that it mutates very quickly, and with all those mutations come a danger. It’s a pathogen that really keeps those who study it on their toes.”

Ha! are you crapping me? You can download virus off the internet now. How they gonna stop it? First off take those crappy boosters vaccines and get rid of them. Genome therapy is now the answer. Stop the genes that these virus need to replicate and you stop the virus. We know it exists so please big pharma, stop being greedy, release the real cure. Everyone who reads this should be pissed as hell to know that you can turn off a gene in your body, in most cases for less then 3 days, and kill almost any CLass A pathogen or virus in your body. Including Ebola, Flu, HIV, Hepatitis and this H5N1, just to name a few.

CDC knows it, Pharmaceutical companies know it, you should know it too. Genome and Epigenome drugs are real science. Demand to know. Demand to know who Alexander Hodge who was with the CDC "IS". He was a leading genetic researcher at the CDC who left to pursue a field of research on identifying and shutting down specific genes in the human body in order to starve Viruses from proteins they needed to replicate. He found over 200 with a few of great importance to humans. Break the replication cycle of a virus and it dies. They put him at UGA to begin testing on mice then to use its primate center for 2nd level human tests. Hodge had a millionare backer behind his work. His research was right on target and cell cultures that had been introduced to these Class A pathogens were immuned to the viruses when introduced after genes had been turned off. He is offly hard to find these days, as is anything to do with his successful research. I wonder why that is?

Hey popsci, prove your not political and do a little research on the science mentioned above. "Will turning off a gene stop you from getting sick?"

Yes it will. Research who Alexander Hodge is, former "Top Genetic researcher with the CDC" who left to follow this line of research. His research was amazing and it worked. Now its all but vanished. Where is he and what happened to this promising cure?

At the very least then, some other genetic researcher bring it back to us and away from big pharma. You cant keep the treasure chest sealed for long.

D13, do you have sources for your argument that viruses replicate via the body's genes? Last I checked, viruses invade a host cell (not a gene, which is made up of DNA contained within the cell). So your claim is quite the bold one.

Gene sequencing and gene therapy are real things, and have real purposes -- but they are not all-purpose. Mostly, they are used to determine and treat diseases and other problems, such as cancer or even alzheimers. However, I can't think of anything gene therapy would do to treat a virus, unless you're targetting the genes of the virus rather than the human body -- but that's a whole other ball game than what you're suggesting.

Big Pharma is greedy, make no doubt. But don't make the next (il)logical jump to say that these wildly powerful treatments to ailments exist but are just being kept secret for.. well, I don't know of any good reason, because if big pharma did have a quick and easy cure for these kinds of things, it would be a cash cow.

So your argument fails that:

Big Pharma is greedy
Big Pharma makes drugs
Big Pharma makes money from its drugs
Therefore Big Pharma has the cure to everything, but is withholding it from the public in order to make money.

The conclusion does not follow from the premise (non-sequitor).

By the way, Big Pharma doesn't have a monopology on medical research. It does conduct a lot of its research, and yes, a lot of their results are held privately, but publicly funded Universities also conduct the same research -- coindidentally, the research being discussed here is being done by a University.

And just to avoid confusion, the vast, vast majority of research done by Big Pharma that's held secret, are its failures, not its successes. If Big Pharma conducts an in-house research project with underwhelming, lacking, or negative results, it often will not publish it at all. But if they have a study that suggests a positive result, you can bet 99% of the time that study will be immediately published.

That is to suggest not that Big Pharma has the cure to everything, but that much of their treatments may not be as effective as they suggest (if you REALLY want the truth, always always compare pharma's results to independent studies done by University researchers.)

Organic Consumers Association Occupies Monsanto Headquarters

Shareholders of Monsanto stocks gathered at the headquarters of the world's largest biotech company in St. Louis on Tuesday.

Activist Adam Eidinger, an OCA member representing Harrington Investments (a socially responsible investor's group), got inside the meeting to speak in favor of a shareholders' resolution which would have studied the "material financial risks or operational impacts associated with its (Monsanto's) chemical products and genetically modified organisms." Outside the meeting a crowd of OCA demonstrators gathered in protest. NJ & OSHA Reject Flu Shot Mandates for Healthcare Workers

New Jersey’s Governor Christie pocket vetoed a bill that would mandate flu vaccine for health care workers. OSHA Says “No” to Flu Shot Mandates Without Exemptions

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) issued a statement opposing mandatory flu shots for health care workers that do not contain exemptions for medical, religious and persona/philosophical belief reasons. OSHA stated:

“ While we are supportive of the Healthy People 2020 goal of a 90% vaccination rate, we have seen no evidence that demonstrates that such a high rate is in fact necessary. Furthermore, the current influenza vaccine is no magic bullet. The current state of influenza vaccine technology requires annual reformulation and revaccination and the efficacy is quite variable. Every year there are numerous circulating strains of influenza that are not included in the vaccine. In years where the antigenic match is good, the vaccine only provides protection against the 3 strains in the formulation. In years when the antigenic match is poor, the vaccine may provide no protection at all. The limits of current influenza vaccine technology are especially problematic in the context of a mandatory influenza vaccination program that results in job loss. Lastly, reliance on a mandatory influenza vaccination policy may provide healthcare workers, health care facility management and patients with an unwarranted sense of security and result in poor adherence to other infection control practices that prevent all types of infections, not just influenza. Influenza vaccination has always been just one part of a comprehensive multi-layered infection control program.”

OSHA’s complete position statement was submitted to the National Vaccine Advisory Committee (NVAC) last September and appears in the NVAC's certified minutes as Appendix B on page 25 here.

Why are ineffective and dangerous drugs peddled by supposed 'public health' organizations in place of well-established natural solutions with virtually zero side effects? The truth of the matter is that drug makers simply would not profit if the world were to awaken to the plethora of free health-promoting substances that beat out over-priced pharmaceuticals and medical interventions. There would be no need for pharmaceutical manufacturers, phony 'public health' organizations peddling the latest 'miracle' drug, and certainly no research organizations feeding off the donations of good-hearted individuals.

You may think that this is an impossibility and that natural solutions simply do not compare to 'scientifically proven' pharmaceutical science. The truth of the matter is that scientific evidence is the very thing disproving the safety and effectiveness of pharmaceutical drugs as well as highlighting the surplus of beneficial properties associated with inexpensive and free vital nutrients.

Contrast: Cancer Drugs Causing 'Mega' Tumors, Turmeric Reduces Tumors by 81%

It was recently revealed that cancer drugs, toted as the only choice among chemotherapy for many cancer sufferers by 'public health' groups, are actually causing massive tumors and subsequently killing the patient. The cancer drugs were found to not only be completely ineffective, but deadly. These are the same drugs that are sold for a premium price and considered to be scientifically validated.

Meanwhile, peer-reviewed research has found that a spice known as turmeric can reduce tumors by 81% naturally. Researchers found that curcumin (a derivative of turmeruc) dramatically decreased brain tumors in 9 out of the 11 studies examined by 81 percent. Furthermore, there was no evidence of toxicity. Widely used as a spice in South Asian and Middle Eastern countries, turmeric is continually being pinpointed as an extremely potent anti-cancer solution. What's more is the fact that turmeric is extremely inexpensive, and can be found around the globe - from Saudi Arabia to Kentucky.

This is just one example of scientific research validating natural alternatives while simultaneously pinpointing the extreme dangers associated with mainstream pharmaceuticals pushed as the only treatment by drug companies.

Antibiotics Causing Mental Illness, Drug Makers Treat With Antipsychotics

As reported back in 2011, antibiotics have been found to permanently destroy beneficial gut bacteria and damage gut health. As you may know, gut health has been directly linked to the state of your mental health, with some even going as far as saying that your gut is your 'second brain'. What this means is that antibiotic use can actually breed mental illness (along with diabetes and metabolic syndrome), which is quite concerning when considering that half of all Americans are to be diagnosed with a mental illness within their life time.

What is the answer to these skyrocketing mental illness rates according to drug makers and the mainstream medical industry? Prescribe mind-altering antipsychotics. Prescribe more drugs to treat a side effect of another drug - receive more profits. After all, the extreme profits generated from antipsychotic drugs became apparent in 2008, becoming the top-selling therapeutic class prescription drug in the United States and grossing over $14 billion in sales.

Of course these antipsychotics are given out to patients instead of actually addressing the core problem associated with gut health. As a result, the patient simply is under the influence of brain-altering effects and never really 'recovers' from their mental illness. Instead, they are sentenced to a lifetime of prescription drug usage with the possibility of reduced dosage over time. To truly address the issue of gut health, it is vital to utilize probiotics to restore the depleted beneficial bacteria back into your gut.

This can easily be done through natural foods or high quality supplementation. Fermented food items such as sauerkraut, tempeh, miso or kefir are all rich sources of probiotic bacteria. But the drug makers would never willingly tell you that, because all of these foods can be found for a few dollars at your local farmers market and can work more effectively to recover mental health than dangerous antipsychotics.

Really good advice from previous posts. Don't forget magnesium (high quality/not oxide), cut out the dairy and calcium supplements. Also, arginine is great for BP, but if you tend toward herpes infections and mouth sores they may get worse because high-dose arginine depletes lysine. Take 500 mg lysine at a different time (on empty stomach) from arginine. Take high dose B-complex or niacin to help stop smoking and open up those blood vessels to decrease BP. Hypertension happens for many reasons and is hard to treat. Quick results are rare so you must stick with anything you try for 2 to 3 months

Groundbreaking new research has linked sodium fluoride to cardiovascular disease, the leading cause of death worldwide.

Researchers found that fluoride consumption directlystimulates the hardening of your arteries, a condition known as atherosclerosis that is highly correlated with the #1 killer.

Sodium fluoride is currently added to the water supply of many cities worldwide, despite extreme opposition from health professionals and previous studieslinking it to decreased IQ and infertility.

In their research, scientists examined the relationship between fluoride intake and the hardening (calcification) of the arteries. Studying more than 60 patients, the researchers found a significant correlation between fluoride consumption and the calcification of your arteries. Published in the January edition of the journal Nuclear Medicine Communications, the research highlights the fact that mass fluoride exposure may be to blame for the cardiovascular disease epidemic that takes more lives each year than cancer. In 2008, cardiovascular killed 17 million people.

According to the authors of the study:

The coronary fluoride uptake value in patients with cardiovascular events was significantly higher than in patients without cardiovascular events.

Amazingly, this is not the first report to come out on the dangers of water fluoridation; however, the United States government (along with other nations) has allowed for the continued fluoridation of the public water supply despite these key findings. In fact, the U.S. government has even gone on record stating that a reduction in water fluoridation needs to occur following the results of a massive study that found water fluoridation affected cognitive function to the point of lowering the IQ of children. It turns out that the announcement was little more than a public relations stunt to curtail the massive wave of activism that followed the findings.

Government Admits Dangers Yet Continues to Pump Fluoride Into Your Water Supply

Over 24 other studies have unanimously concluded that fluoride negatively impacts cognitive function. In addition to these 24 studies focusing on cognition, over 100 animal studies have linked fluoride to an increase in male infertility, diabetes, and a whole host of other health problems. In the latest study on cognition, it was found that that 28% of the children who lived in an area where fluoride levels were low achieved the highest test scores. This means that the children exposed to less fluoride scored normal or advanced, while only 8% of fluoridated children did the same.

In fact, the safety precautions regarding sodium fluoride are quite telling themselves:

Risk and Safety Phrases.

R25 – Toxic if swallowed.

R32 – Contact with acid liberates very toxic gas.

R36/38 – Irritating to skin and eyes.

S1/2 – Keep locked up and out of reach of children.

S22 – Do not breathe dust.

S36 – Wear suitable protective clothing.

S45 - In case of accident or if you feel unwell, seek medical advice immediately (show the label whenever possible.)

But what about cavity prevention?

Since 1962 the government has recommended fluoride levels between 0.7 and 1.2 milligrams per liter in the nation's drinking water. Touted as an excellent cavity blocker, fluoride has been praised for its alleged power to prevent tooth decay and boost oral health. Research has now revealed that fluoride, the very substance that is supposed to prevent tooth decay, actually does nothing to prevent against cavities. In fact, vitamin D has been found to be significantly more effective in cavity prevention without the extreme side effects. Instead of damaging your body, vitamin D slashes your risk of just about everything fluoride consumption causes.

According to the latest numbers, over 72 percent of Americans drink water treated with fluoride. Is it any wonder that cardiovascular disease rates are off the charts? Perhaps most concerning is the fact that fluoride does not even prevent cavities, which is the very reason legislators have pushed to keep it in the public water supply despite the links to deadly disease. Even if fluoride was found to prevent cavities, would it be worth the adverse effects?

Fluoride should be completely removed from the international water supply, as it is a threat to public health. Until the proper legislation is passed, acquiring a high-quality water filter that removes fluoride is vital for the health perseverance of you and your family.

Officials at UC Berkeley have tested rain water that turned out to be 181 times the limit for drinking water. This is happening at the same time that our FAKE corporate media is telling the sheeple that there is absolutely nothing to worry about.

“As shown in the graphs published by UC Berkeley, Iodine-131 peaked at 20.1 becquerels per liter, a measure of radioactivity, on the roof of Etcheverry Hall during heavy rains a week ago. The federal maximum level of iodine-131 allowed in drinking water is 0.111 becquerels per liter,” The Bay Citizen reported Saturday.

In Boise, Idaho:

Elevated levels of radioactive material in rainwater have been expected as a result of the nuclear incident after the events in Japan since radiation is known to travel in the atmosphere – precipitation data collected by EPA in the states of California, Idaho and Minnesota have seen elevated levels of radiation in recent precipitation events.
